Who keeps crash reports

The Nebraska State Patrol says the Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT), Department of Records, keeps crash reports for the State of Nebraska. NDOT also processes requests for these reports.1,2

The State Patrol says it does not keep vehicle crash reports or photos. It also does not keep records created by other agencies, even during a joint investigation. Send your request to NDOT instead.2

The City of York Police Department says that since August 27, 2021, under Nebraska legislative bill 174 (LB 174), you can get motor vehicle collision reports through NDOT.4

How to request a copy

By mail: Send your request to Nebraska Department of Transportation, Accident Records Division/Highway Safety, PO Box 94759, Lincoln, NE 68509-4759. Call NDOT first to find out the correct amount to pay. NDOT's phone number is on the Nebraska State Patrol's Crash/Accident Report Requests page.1,2,4

Online: You can buy a copy for download on NDOT's website. The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office says this, and its Online Report Lookup page links to the NDOT site.3

In person: The City of York Police Department lists an in-person option at the Highway Safety Office, 1500 Highway 2-Room 14, Lincoln, NE. Confirm the location before you go.4

What it costs

You pay for reports you download from NDOT's website. The Lancaster County Sheriff's Office says NDOT sells them there.3

If city police or a sheriff handled the crash

If a city police department or county sheriff's office handled your crash, check that agency's page. Some send you to NDOT. Some also offer their own way to get a copy.3,4,5

Lincoln Police Department: Its Police Records page links to a Crash Reports page for crash reports the department completed.6

Lancaster County Sheriff's Office: Its Online Report Lookup page links to NDOT's website, where you can buy motor vehicle accident reports for download. You can also get copies of reports from its Administrative Support Division, at the LSO service desk in the Hall of Justice, 575 S 10th Street, Lincoln, NE 68508.3

Sarpy County Sheriff's Office: Its page says you can get a copy of a completed crash report through the CrashDocs.org website.5

City of York Police Department: It says collision reports are available through NDOT. For a crash it investigated, get a copy through one of the options on its page. These include in person and by mail.4

Do you need to file your own report?

If you were a driver in a reportable crash that law enforcement did not investigate, the Nebraska DMV says you must complete a Driver's Motor Vehicle Crash Report. Send it to NDOT within 10 days after the date of the crash.7

The DMV says the property-damage threshold for a reportable crash is $2,000 or more to any one vehicle or other property. This applies to crashes on or after July 18, 2026. For crashes before that date, the threshold is $1,500 or more.7

If law enforcement investigated your crash, you do not need to file this report.4,8

The Nebraska Driver's Manual says to use NDOT Form 41 (October 2020). You can get it from state and local law enforcement agencies.8

The manual says you can also download the form or submit it electronically at https://dot.nebraska.gov/safety/crash-reporting/. The City of York Police Department also says NDOT lets you complete the report online.4,8

The manual says that failing to report a crash as required is a Class II or III misdemeanor. It can also lead to revocation of your license or privilege to drive.8
