Crash Overview
On Monday afternoon, the homeowners, Betty Conklin and her husband, were in the family room when police said a car ran off Route 563 and hit their master bedroom. Neither was hurt. After they got outside, the car caught fire, and the flames spread through the downstairs and up to the second floor, according to the report.
Conklin, who has lived in the home for more than 50 years, told CBS News the fire destroyed most of what was inside. She said she has not been able to go upstairs.
Neighbors say the stretch of road has seen other serious crashes. Resident Ben Rinaudo said his fence has been damaged at least seven times and described the curve as dangerous. He said he has placed logs in his yard as a barrier, installed a flashing arrow to warn drivers, and previously asked Burlington County for safety improvements. He said he would like a guardrail installed.
Officials with Burlington County said they are unable to comment while state police carry out their investigation.
